CAMPAIGN “SUPPORT THE FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION”

DELNA INVITES YOU TO GET INVOLVED IN THE CAMPAIGN:

SUPPORT THE FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION

.

As a public benefit organisation, Transparency International Latvia (Delna) has stood for transparency and the battle against corruption in Latvia for more than 20 years. This fall Delna launched a campaign, SUPPORT THE FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION. The goal of the campaign is to strengthen Delna’s capacity to fight corruption by involving members of the public to donate through pro bono work, organisational development, project co-financing and provision for contingencies.

.

Delna’s campaign calls on the public to support the fight against corruption in one of three ways:

1. Set up a standing order for a monthly bank transfer to Delna’s bank account. (Regular contributors are now donating €5-50 per month.)

2. Make a single donation to Delna

3. Support a specific Delna project valued more than 1000 EUR.

.

DELNA PRO BONO WORK IS FINANCED BY INDIVIDUAL DONORS

.

The Delna team spend much of their time on pro bono work. They actively respond to current events, pursue law suits, meet and support victims of corruption, convey viewpoints, propose changes, and provide analysis and advice. Such work can only be possible through funding from donations.

.

Last year the Delna team accomplished important changes and they continue to pursue a range of pro bono works:

.

1. Observing the selection of Latvenergo board members in order to promote a fair and equitable process.

.

2. Advising whistleblowers and residents affected by corruption or injustice in state and municipal institutions, in order to reduce the arbitrariness and the feeling of impunity.

.

3. Advising public administration employees about working with whistleblowers and developing internal whistleblowing systems so as to strengthen the capacity of state institutions.

.

4. Presentation to the Saeima of an initiative with 11,000 signatures requesting that audit of the parliamentary budget be carried out by the State Audit Office, and not by the Saeima itself, to ensure independent audits and greater tarnsparency in parliamentary work

.

5. Publishing a database of Saeima candidates and supporting the creation of an “election cheat sheet” tool  www.svitrosana.lv to promote responsibility among politicians and voters.

.

6. Requesting explanations about the work of the Riga City Council, the State Police, the Prosecutor General’s Office and other institutions in order to improve transparency and accountability

.

7. Protesting against the awarding of emission allowances of 15 million euros to an inappropriate project in Ventspils,winning court proceedings against VARAM over the issuance of project information, in order to promote fair competition and transparency;

.

8. Court proceedings against Aivars Lembergs for offending the honour and dignity of Delna and its members. Standing up against dishonest officials’ attempts to divert public attention from possible violations.

.

9 Raising public awareness about corruption, money laundering and the shadow economy, in order to facilitate cleaning up the business environment in Latvia.

.

10. Organising public debate on whistleblowing and lobbying disclosure issues with the participation of foreign experts, in order to promote best practices and knowledge transfer.

.

WHY DONATE

.

The largest part of Delna’s income comes from winning tenders for projects. Nevertheless, donations account for a significant proportion of the budget: 27% in 2018.

.

.

WHY DELNA INVITES YOU TO DONATE FOR PRO BONO WORK

  • Relying solely on project funds, it would be impossible to ensure funding work on the promotion of transparency and the fight against corruption,
  • Tax reform has significantly limited business donations for public benefit organisations.

.

CAMPAIGN OBJECTIVE

.

€20,000 is needed for Delna’s pro bono work, co-financing projects, strengthening the team and other emerging needs, as well for increasing Delna’s positive influence in 2019.

.

The goal of €20,000 is ambitious. However, the involvement of many can make a real difference. With the support of only 300 monthly donors, the required amount could be raised by the end of the year.

.

By donating a small amount each month, individual contributors can make a considerable contribution to resources over the course of a year. Currently, Delna has 12 monthly supporters. The donated amount is from €5 to €50 a month – an average of €20 per month. By attracting only 50 more monthly donors donating an average of €20 EUR every month, the resulting total of 62 donors would contribute approximately €15,000. This amount would cover a substantial portion of Delna’s pro bono work, enabling the Delna team to expand their activities and to engage in new projects and activities, which have until now have not been possible.
