AMBASSADORS, LATVIAN OFFICIALS AND TI LATVIA EMPHASIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF COOPERATION IN COMBATING CORRUPTION

On the International Anti-Corruption Day, the US Ambassador to Latvia John Carwille, the President of Latvia Egils Levits, several Latvian state officials, as well as other foreign ambassadors and Inese Tauriņa, the Director of the Transparency International Latvia, presented a joint video statement to mark the importance of cooperation in the fight against corruption.

Ambassador Carwille said that corruption drains resources, that are aimed to help citizens and weakens our collective security and the sovereignty of nations. “The United States is proud to support Latvia’s anti-corruption reform,” added Carwille.

President Egils Levits emphasized that our freedom and sovereignty are the core values ​​of NATO and the European Union, which are expressed in our democratic systems. “Fundamental to this is the rule of law, without which they cannot be upheld. A major treat to the rule of law is corruption. Therefore, the fight against corruption must be a major element of our individual and collective defence,” said Levits.

Inese Tauriņa, urged to remain vigilant: “The fight is not over, because those who want to undermine our freedom will continue their work. We stand with Latvia in this fight because we are stronger when all of us are prosperous, stable and secure,” said Tauriņa.
