Transparency International Latvia (“Sabiedrība par atklātību – Delna”), in cooperation with Estonian partner Transparency International Estonia and Swedish partner Open Knowledge Sweden, has started a new project called “Harnessing digital tools to tackle corruption in the Nordic-Baltic Region”. The project, funded by the Nordic Council of Minister office in Latvia, aims to foster Nordic-Baltic cooperation in the disclosure of essential anti-corruption data and in the development of digital tools enabling citizens and journalists to prevent and detect corruption.
The project will run from September 2021 until February 2022, and envisages the following activities:
- Update of the website Deputāti uz Delnas, including the development of a new interactive map to explore the location across Latvia of private interests disclosed by Latvia’s Members of the Parliament
- Development of concept documents outlining steps for further development of the platforms Opener, created by Transparency International Estonia (TI Estonia) and TI Latvia in 2020, and “Open Up!” created by Open Knowledge Sweden (OKS) in 2021. Both platforms aim at increasing transparency in public procurement – the first one with a focus on detecting conflict of interests and favouritism in the award of public contracts in Latvia and Estonia, and the latter with a focus on municipal expenditures in Sweden
- Research and analysis to provide governments in Latvia, Estonia and Sweden with recommendations on the potential implementation of common data standards in the areas of political financing, public procurement, company ownership and public officials’ interest and asset declarations
- Organisation a regional roundtable to lay down the basis for a Nordic-Baltic community of civil society organisations and government agencies committed to ensuring the availability of relevant anti-corruption-related datasets and the development of innovative digital tools using those data to prevent corruption
TI Latvia encourages civil society representatives, journalists, data scientists, and public officials who are interested in the project to get in touch and present their ideas.
