Corruption is a phenomenon that can have a long-term negative impact not only on individual sectors, but also on the national economy and the well-being of society. Because of this year’s geopolitical turmoil, Delna and the KNAB call for special attention to be paid to the negative impact of corruption on national and global security on International Anti-Corruption Day.

The event “Corruption – a threat to national and global security” will be held in two parts. The first part of the event will be a panel discussion, moderated by Latvian Radio 1 journalist Mr. Aidis Tomsons. Representatives from the Saeima, the Ministry of the Interior, the KNAB and Delna will discuss the negative impacts of corruption on Latvia’s internal and external security, as well as what measures should be taken to reduce the role of corruption in Latvia’s security.

The second part of the event will feature a guest lecture by Sarah Chayes, an anti-corruption expert from the United States, on corruption as a global security threat. The guest lecture will be followed by Q&A session and a speech by the representative of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) on NABU and Ukraine’s assessment of the impact of corruption on security.

The main target audience is Members of the 14th Saeima, employees of state and local government institutions, representatives of security sector organisations and others.

The event is supported by the US Department of Justice and the US Department of State. This event is made possible by funding from the Baltic-American Freedom Foundation (BAFF). For more information about BAFF scholarships and speaker support, visit www.balticamericanfreedomfoundation.org.
