ALLIANCE AGAINST CORRUPTION IN LATVIA

MANIFESTO

It has become evident over the past few years that corruption in Latvia is widespread and that its true extent has been only partially identified. Exposure of recent scandals intensified with the disclosure of the “Oligarch Conversations” and was followed by revelation of irregularities in business insolvency administration, the banking sector, the judicial system, the catering industry, as well as in recent developments in the construction sector and elsewhere.

Law enforcement agencies, government institutions, business and civil society, each acting on their own, have not been able to adequately constrain these criminal practices which harm us all. Corruption is excessively expensive. In 2016, corruption is estimated to have amounted to more than half of the state budget – at least 3.8 billion euros.

We need to find a new solution, combining the authorities, businesses and civil society in a joint fight against corruption and for transparency. Only through organised co-operation and joint efforts can the common goal be achieved – to provide a strong bulwark against corruption in Latvia. Thus, to accelerate the battle against corruption and to increase transparency, the Transparency International Latvia – Delna has established the Alliance Against Corruption in Latvia.

The Alliance Against Corruption in Latvia unites institutions, companies and active people. The Alliance’s objectives are to educate the public on issues of anti-corruption, to promote whistleblowing, and to support transparency.

In reaching Nordic indicators, we would gain the use of an extra 3.8 billion euros per year – an average of €2,000 per capita. This would provide sufficient funds for education, health, safety, pensions, infrastructure, development and a good life in Latvia.

Let’s make Latvia a transparent country. Where there is transparency, there is considerably less corruption, fraud, shadow economy, and cartels.

Let’s make Latvia a fair land of prosperity, in which everyone can live well and with which we can be proud throughout the world.
